Globally, the fashion industry generates an estimated 92 million tons of textile waste annually. Much of this waste comes from discarded clothing, often made from low-quality materials designed for short-term use. These items are difficult to recycle or upcycle due to their poor fabric composition and are frequently sent to landfills or incinerated, contributing to pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. Even well-intentioned clothing donations sometimes fail to find a second life, as many second-hand garments are exported to developing countries, overwhelming their local markets and eventually ending up in unmanaged dumps.
